Sulphur Coal

 

Most shafts in West Fife were initially sunk to the Dunfermline Splint as the Sulphur Coal was considered as an inferior coal. An indication of the undulating nature of the West Fife Coalfield can be observed by the varying depths of collieries sunk to the Dunfermline Splint.
